Learning in Ms. Blackwood's Math Class

I believe all of my students can learn everything, and work hard to convince them of that and hold them to high expectations! Here's a look into learning in my classroom and my "behind the scenes" teaching practices. The two Standards of Mathematical Practice (SMP) that I focus on most are #1: "make sense of problems and persevere in solving them" and #3: "construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others" because I feel these address skills students may not typically associated with math - yet they are increasingly relevant in our society today for success in everyday life.

Note: I have taught 11th and 12th grade at DeVry Advantage Academy in Chicago since 2012 - primarily Honors Advanced Algebra/Trig and AP Calculus AB.

The Learning Journey: Developing a Mathematical Mindset

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. (SMP #1)

The problem solving in my class is challenging, often a shift from previous math courses my students have experienced. A large portion of my class time is spent working with their groups solving application problems (after all, "together everyone achieves more") and I typically ask questions rather than give answers when they are stuck or confused. My emphasis with all my students is on developing a growth mindset: learning to persevere and learn from their mistakes until they are successful. It is not always easy for them, but I see progress with all my students throughout the year!

Construct viable arguments and critique the
reasoning of others. (SMP #3)

Students quickly grow to expect a culture of mathematical discussions and sharing their ideas with their classmates. Whether it's a whole-class math talk, a student homework presentation, misconception re-engagement, group problem-solving time or differentiated review time, my students know I encourage them to explain their answers fully and help others. I believe sharing their process as well as comparing and critiquing each other's ideas is invaluable in their learning journey. Group collaboration and discussion is a component of every class period...and mini whiteboards work great for that! Sometimes they work together to create their own problems for a "quickfire" #teamchallenge :)

The Learning Journey: Behind the Scenes

  1. Write learning targets to break down the Common Core State Standards for Math (CCSSM) within a unit
  2. Create an instructional video for each target - posted on Edpuzzle with questions embedded in it
  3. Create a resource hyperdoc with Khan academy links aligned to each target
  4. Create a target sheet for students to track their progress (quiz scores, practice, etc.) and make a "cheat sheet" for common vocab/concepts
  5. Create a spreadsheet to track students' quiz scores and retakes
(I developed the scoring rubric with the help of students)
